Vegetarian food guide to Meghalaya

The moment we think of North-East, the first thing that comes to our mind is – Food Woes. Dominated by non-veg cuisines and popular for non-veg food festivals, a common notion that goes with North-east is – How do we manage food?

Dishes.

1. Pumaloi

Rice being the staple food of Meghalaya, umpteen dishes can be made from it. One such favourite is Pumaloi – powered rice. Pumaloi rice is commonly served during public celebrations and festivals and is a unique part of Meghalayan cuisine.


2. Pukhlein

A traditional rice flour bread recipe that is the region's favourite, Pukhlien, a fluffy bread that can complement any best, is best teamed with tea and coffee. Pukhlein is the perfect evening snack for most people in Shillong.


3. Sakin Gata

Sakin Gata is a white rick cake, consumed as a sweet delicacy in the Meghalaya cuisine. Sticky rice is soaked overnight and mixed with sugar. Best served hot with a wholesome meal.


4. Kyat

A drink known as the NH-7 weekender drink; Kyat is a local fermented rice beer that is primarily prepared from fermented rice that adds to the flavour. There are a dozen places that serve Kyat in Shillong.


5. Vegetarian momos

Meghalaya is not too far away from Sikkim when it comes to momos. Even the red spicy chutney of Meghalaya is famous for its spice and taste. Almost every food stall in the street of Meghalaya serves momos.


6. Tungrymbai.

One of the many popular dishes in Meghalaya – Tungrymbai is made using fermented soybeans. This dish is best paired with bread and roti.
